I'm reliving Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares in a Music School in Singapore

In a music school, you may have the best talented teachers, best behaving and progressing students, friendly colleagues and all that jazz. All things all well and good, until you look what lies beneath the surface.

When you have such bad pay which the boss won't raise, and such a bad system that often causes a miscomm between him, the front desk, and the rest of the staff, why would you wanna continue to stay here? As such, I think enough is enough. I have made a decision to leave my workplace on 30th June.

And don't get me wrong, I love to teach. However in a toxic environment which seen a few teachers leave when I first shifted in from the Pianist studio to here, I wouldn't want to stay long term. If that's not enough, my new workplace will see not just me leaving, but also another OG teacher also transferred from the Pianist Studio and potentially another, much to the shock of some of the parents I spoke to! If this doesn't spell things bad enough, I don't know what is!!

This is like a music school's equivalent of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares and Hotel Hell Series, people! I've been watching so much of these reality shows recently, I'm fking re-living that!!

Again, you have talented staff to help! So treat them as such. Already lately I'm starting to post all my student results I've been getting for this fleet of candidates I'm sending for exams. If I have a good pass rate or a good number of distinctions, this will show them what my current workplace at Kovan Singapore will be missing once I leave! And yes, already parents are close enough to me that they want me to continue teaching their kids privately which I already agreed to. And yes, I understand by right, indemnity states that I shouldn't poach, but I don't think I'm the asshole doing this and parents who initiated coming along with me is NOT part of the contract and I can't stop them. Look even I take barely a third of my cohort, AND I give them a further $10 discount from the regular fees (which were already dirt cheap to begin with), I would still make a profit!!! That's how bad it is!

Review: Aureus Productions presents Freddy Kempf at Singapore Esplanade 01 AUG 2018

OVERVIEW

This concert / recital was brought by Aureus Productions involving the British Pianist and recording artist Freddy Kempf presenting a selection of Kapustin, Chopin and Rachmaninov. Freddy is more well known for his love of Chamber music and his explosive style of play.

Ticket prices ranged from 38-68 SGD a pop which is actually reasonable considering how difficult his repertoire line up as follows:

1. Selections from Kapustin's Concert Etudes (I, VII and VIII)
2. Chopin Etudes Opus 10 (Full Run)
3. Rachmaninoff's Opus 39 Music Tableaux (Full Run)

Presentation

His presentation of tonight's repertoire was simple and straightforward without any need of emceeing. I always liked the jazzy groove of Kapustin Concert Etudes which he selected the first and the last two. Hence it was nice that he was able to pull that off. The first half however I thought was a bit rushed especially once he got to the Chopin Opus 10 Etudes after the Kapustin Concert Etudes. However I can understand as I did a few of the Opus 10 Etudes, just not in one sitting like he did. He would need this kind of adrenaline rush to keep that pace and momentum up, more for the faster paced ones.

I always have soft copies of the sheet music in hand for reference.
Either from IMSLP or Scribd

But this comes at a brutal tradeoff that really drove me insane last night. The thing is the acoustics of the Esplanade Hall which is more suited to an orchestra, rather than an individual piano. It naturally caused too many of the running passages to be excessively muddy. Even cutting the use of the damper pedal was not quite enough to eliminate most of the blurry lines. It was not as bad with Martha Argerich's debut in June due to her generally slower pace of her repertoire. Yet I would not attribute this fault to Freddy Kampf either because of the understandably vicious demands of his first half. In fact I was actually appreciative that he was able to tame the hall and pull back the tempo for his 2nd half program featuring the Music Tableaux by Rachmaninoff so it did sound clean. Freddy's playing as a whole was undeniably explosive and he made it look easy. Nevertheless, the acoustics of the hall just did not do any justice for him, especially the first half.

Another bummer was the encore. As a virtuoso like him and myself, I expected a bigger encore by him like a Scherzo or a concert etude by Liszt like La Campanella, that'll keep many of us who are piano aficionados like myself in this hall happy. What he played was the waltz in A-Flat Minor Opus 69 No. 1, a simple work compared to his first half. Likely he ran outta gas, I don't know.

Audience etiquette

Audience etiquette, boy that could definitely be improved. A few very obvious moments where some screech popped out here and there. However what irked me the most are latecomers to the concert. In that case I sure wished the ushers and the emcees could enforce that latecomers could only enter or leave during the intermission. If they really want to catch the rest of the 1st half, have them occupy any unoccupied rear seats and bar them from entering the center stalls till after the intermission. Especially those in the front row who came late. Freddy was actually nice enough to allow them to enter and fill the front and wait for them to settle down before proceeding. But concert goers, please avoid doing that as it is kinda disrespectful to the performer. My guideline is to be early and seated about 15-20 minutes before the concert begins.

Bottom Line

With the likes of Martha Argerich who also recently came to Singapore already at her advanced age, it is pretty much up to a new breed of virtuosos to keep the ball rolling. Freddy Kempf is a master of his craft. However, maybe next time a smaller place like the Recital Hall or VCH or have some movable sound dampening material.

+ Excellent Lineup
+ Controlled 2nd half
+ Fair Ticket Prices.

- Unacceptable Acoustics, the Concert Hall is just not suited for it.
- Concert Etiquette could be improved
- Bummer Encore.

I'm seriously getting sick and tired of finding for jobs.

I really don't need to say much.

I'm so unbelievably pissed over the immense lengths and many interviews for any music related jobs out there. The govt just really needs to bloody help me instead of giving jobs to others now!

Seriously pulling my hair out there, and now I'm eating grass.
Also urgently calling for students by putting brochures but I've not gotten a single contact!

HEEEEEELLLPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!

Ultimate Transport Nightmares: SMRT, Someone fainted next to me in the overcrowded train

After taking the train to work this morning, I just felt the need to post this. In light of the recent breakdowns that have been plaguing the train services to this degree, what happened this morning really makes this unacceptable.

The train this morning during the morning peak is, as you'd guess, crowded as heck. Not only it was crowded, it was getting stuffy too. But it is because of overcrowding, a passenger a few feet from me fainted and collapsed onto the ground which I reckon it's partially attributed to claustrophobic-ness and getting sandwiched by the crowd). Whether any SMRT staff had any brains to tend to her after passengers have to carry her out of the train remains to be seen. But regardless, when you have such a population and such a heavy density, with the Govt even pushing for 6.9 Mill is absolutely insane! What they didn't think what may happen was the fact the transport and Singapore's infrastructure are stretched beyond its safe limits. The MRT is getting long in the tooth and they want to bring in more people to render the entire rail system completely and utterly useless.

And earlier this week, for the benefit of any of the Singapore readers living under a rock, 2 trains collided can causing injuries to 36 passengers. How for some reason God knows why the signalling system failed to prevent this from happening is beyond me. And even how SMRT let slip lapses for the flood that happened in the underground MRT tunnels is something we've not heard before. Day 01 Downtown Line screwed up, not long ago 2 workers died.... the rest I don't wanna think about.

If you really ask me, SMRT, its leadership, and any ministers that are directly or indirectly involved are literally just leaving us the passengers to fend for ourselves whenever the train breaks. For K Shanmugam to boast our 'World-class' transport system and demanding the public to get behind Khaw Boon Wan, I WILL NOT! It has been a whopping 3 years which has been too agonising for some to keep facing transport nightmares which has been way too long. And for too long I've lost confidence in their ability to manage such a critical aspect of the needs of the Citizens. For most of us including me, the train has been our primary means of travel and for some the ONLY means of travel. Sure our transit system cannot be like Japan's or Hong Kong's but this current standard is disgraceful.

And if they think their method to improve the system is to increase train fares is sensible, come on the govt and the ministries have so much money in their coffers, none of which is channeled to the betterment of the rail system. To make us wait till at least 2019 till the trains improve? Well, some of us will not live till this happens.

On the bottomline, after a few years of Khaw Boon Wan and Lieutenant General Desmond managing this sector for a while, it is clear now that they have been completely ineffective in their roles to make public transport better. In fact you can say under them, we've gone back to the Stone Age of Transport reliability. You introduce a lot of new stuff and in the end just doesn't work out well. In all straight it's time for them to pack their bags and move on.

If I were the president or Prime Minister or what, I'll sack you all straightaway!

Where I am now....what next for me. And... an upcoming Concert!

Haven’t give these out in a while. But I think now 2017 is coming to an end and now since I’m now a graduate I thought it’s a good time to see where I am at. And since some people have been asking who I’ve been so far, well I’m obliged to answer.
I’m still the same ol’ Paul, haha. Still the same music freak, the same music aficionado. It has been quite a year I must say. Yes! I graduated from LASALLE with a Bachelor's Degree in Music.
Job searching in Singapore has been an absolute nightmare at least for me as some of you have been hearing from me face to face. Been sending out applications after applications with it ending up sticking into some unknown realm. For me it’s difficult because my currently only form of income is weddings which I will touch on a little later. I find it unbecoming of companies that I write to, not to return me the results of job applications even if I write to them directly. Even though I heard from somewhere or someplace that job applications will be easier to get, I still don’t see the effects of it.
Back to the weddings. As said earlier, till I’m able to at least find a stable income, I need to start increasing my rates for Church weddings from now and implement a few changes. And also partially the second reason is because as a professional and I never want to mess things up. A deposit or payment before any of such services requested for would also be nice. It pains me a little bit as many of you all know I’m a nice guy that has been giving my services all the time. But at this phase and situation there’s a need to differentiate between service and profession and I think most of you would agree with me. But back to the good stuff, I’m still doing music pretty much actively. With 2 concerts coming up for the end of the year, one for Ping Yi Secondary School, and the other being Cor Novum, the passion of music is still burning in me. For the Cor Novum especially, we're promoting this event heavily because it is for a charity.

The Genesis II Project Choir: Cor Novum will be doing a concert again this year! Tickets at 22 a pop and proceeds will go to the GIFT Campaign of the Catholic Foundation to build the church of tomorrow. Link: https://www.ticketbox.sg/spes-novum#/ Venue: Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, Singapore
Date: 3 December 2017
Time: 8pm
